Garance is a courtesan whose intertwining and reconstruction stories from the life of the XIX century theater are interwoven. Although married, pantomime Baptise is in love with Garance. There are indications that love could be fully reposted, but Garance is interested in the brutal criminal lacenaire, as well as by an ambitious actor Frederick. The film is divided into two parts because the Nazi regime during the Second World War forbade filming for more than 90 minutes.
